Core skills of people through education
virender kapoor
We need to Change our national Character through our huge education system.
‘Cultivate to Last’
Discipline and Core skills have to be the KRA of education if you want to turn around the nation.
Catch them young is the key to success.
school
In this case it should be bottom upwards and not top down approach. We may have a principal who is disciplined but it is still not the KRA for the school. It should be a part of the school motto- with a sense of pride where a principal and every student could say ‘No child from this school will ever be late for an event throughout his life’. It is engrained into you like a part of your DNA. That is the level of perfection we need to achieve. If anyone fails to do it, he is not bothered about the punishment but bothered more about letting down his school and letting down himself. Discipline and honor are pride and pride is emotionally driven.
Schools touch every child or alternately, every child has to enter the portals of a school. There are 15 lac or 1500,000 (1.5 million) schools in India and the battle must start here, if we want success.
These core skills need to be literally injected at a very early stage of life and class 1 student is 6 year old. By the time you are 18 your, ideas are pretty firmed up and you refuse to learn; but if you have been injected with this core skill virus or bug at 6 years of age and constantly hammered into you for the entire schooling period we can expect a higher success rate. It then gets into a higher order in under graduation and PG. These have to a few core habits which become a reflex action.Habits die hard and habits form harder.
“Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed down-stairs one step at a time.” ― Mark Twain
The challenge is not limited to students; it is a problem with teachers too. Teachers training also must have this as a front runner. Special core skill courses have to be done and mandatory for employment. B Ed is not about pedagogy or teaching skills alone, core skills must spread across as a parallel curriculum.
Unfortunately even today despite better salaries good people are not coming to take up a job as school teachers. They may not be very great at academics and ramping up that is a huge challenge for schooling system, but you don’t have to be a great subject matter expert to learn and practice and propagate these core skills to the children. You may not be a great economics teacher but you can be punctual. In fact learning these is much simpler than becoming a great math teacher. Even the low performing teachers can learn these and that is the bright side of the problem. An average or below average teacher or even a student can acquire these habits.

This whole national level game changer exercise can be a success if practiced and not preached. It has to be our national agenda we need to hold the baton tight for decades on to set things right.
