Invest In Your self

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe” -Abraham Lincoln

These are the days of opportunity. You are born in the knowledge age where people can earn not only by physical labor but also by using their competence and mental abilities. Therefore only those succeed who are prepared to learn. If you fail to keep pace with the environment and do not update your knowledge continuously it will not be long before you will become obsolete.

Sarswati is the goddess of knowledge and if you invest in Sarswati then Laxmi ( Wealth) will always follow automatically. Make yourself as competent and Knowledgeable as possible.

Being competent does not mean learning only what is taught to you in school and college. This of course is important; for instance if you are doing B Com then you must have adequate grasp of the subject. If as a commerce student you are asked to explain the difference between credit and debit during an interview, you are expected to know the answer. If you cannot give a proper answer you will obviously get rejected.

Going beyond your mandate is important. Those who walk that extra mile come out as winners. I remember a senior manager in a multinational company telling me his success story. His name is Prakash Ganotra who passed out of IIM Ahmadabad. He was from a small village and till tenth class he studied in vernacular language! But he was very good at math and science which was his domain knowledge. When he went to college he decided to learn English and made all out effort to “Invest in himself”. He started reading English comics and story books to start with. There after he moved on to reading short stories that are read by 6th or 7th class children. “I had to catch up with others and make up for the time I had lost out” he explained. He was intelligent enough to learn on his own but never hesitated in going to any English speaking person to clarify his doubts. He started reading English news papers and did this very regularly. After some time he started buying old English magazines to learn more. He told me “Second hand Magazines and novels are available at one fourth the price of the original”. In a very short time with his determination and hard work he did a value addition to himself.

A lot depends on you to make improvement in yourself. Today during a graduation a student has enough time to sharpen his/her axe by utilizing his time properly. Most waste their time by chatting with friends or while away time in cafeterias or watching movies.

A graduation student is between 18 to 21 years. This is the prime time of his life, and imagines it is wasted out totally.

Here is what can be done to invest in yourself:-

1. Develop reading habits and pick up old story books ad novels which you enjoy. These improve your expression and language.

2. Start reading news paper every day. Read all of it and especially the edit page.

3. See news channels as they have accurate information

4. Must watch TV debates, they are a great learning resource.

5. Knowledge channels like Discovery, National Geographic and animal planet show very good and researched programs. Watch these.

6. Make a routine, get up at an appropriate time and do get a proper 8 hour sleep. This way you invest in your health.

7. At young age learn Yoga and pranayam and do regular exercise. This is the best investment.

8. During free time you can take up some additional courses like computers, foreign language, graphics, art and craft or dancing.

9. Develop a good hobby of your choice.

10. Pick up some game like table tennis, cricket volleyball that you like.

Do not waste time because time never comes back. Utilize the spare time fully so that you make yourself a better more competent and healthier being.

People can steal your money, take away your property, loot your ornaments and gold- but nobody can ever take away your knowledge that you have invested in. It will always remain with you as the biggest support all through your life.
