Why Graduates cannot crack job interviews

Why graduates and Post graduates cannot get jobs?

And what is the Solution?

“Micro reading”

Virender Kapoor

India is now the fifth largest economy in the world and our PM recently in the US said we will be the third largest economy very soon.

This is a very cheerful news for all Indians especially those who want to become a part of this success story. This means more business and job opportunity. Today the rest of the world economy is slowing down yet India is the fastest growing economy- even China is having economic issues. Several Western Corporations are setting shop in India.

Out of almost 80 lac Post graduates and graduates passing out every year in India only top 2 lac make it to MBA and civil services et. Rest of them look for jobs. There are enough jobs and industry cannot find good, well informed graduates for working at several levels.

Why graduates cannot be employed?

Various studies report that more than 80% graduates or even more are unemployable including engineers.

Let us understand that a company requires very few strategists, finance wizards or scientists to run business. A large work force is required for coordination, handling other people, vendors, clients and marketing and several other jobs in the corporate hierarchy. Industry does not get smart people to do jobs like receptionists, people marketing simple products that they manufacture.

What is the problem?

Today everyone is focusing on ‘how to speak’ smartly, how to dress up well and look smart. ”What you speak” matters more than mere optics. In my decade’s long experience of heading Business schools I interacted with thousands of students, PG/UG and the major deficiency is the lack of content, lack of basic idea of what is happening around. A person applying for a job cannot converse on topics which are simple and expected to be known to every youth. In short they need to develop intellect, so that they look educated, well read and can articulate their ideas in a convincing manner. I am told by the recruiters that when they advertise for a job they get 50 applicants. When they call and interview 30 of them sometimes they cannot find one suitable person for the job. Even to set up your own small business good articulation and content is required.

What is the solution?

Let us understand, a degree does not guarantee a job. You have to market yourself. Are you marketable? Will you be able to discuss things intelligently? Most of the people cannot because they have never taken interest in other things like debates, writing for news letters or reading as a hobby. How can a coaching center train you for a job in two months when you never did much in last twenty years? You cannot mug up 500 questions/answers and get selected.

Reading books is the answer to improve communication skills to get a job

Reading alone can build intellect and confidence. Videos can’t impact human brain as leisurely reading can. You cannot learn swimming by watching an Olympian swim from outside the pool!

Researchers carried study comparing digital and print reading involving 1.7 lac readers. Comprehension, was better when people read print rather than digital texts.

You need simple under 80 pages books — micro reading- on a very broad spectrum of topics covering topics like Patience, applied Leadership, ethos of armed forces, taking initiative, Integrity and much more- people judging you are looking for this in you today? Can you talk your way through? I have created a set of ten such books for this purpose to help a large cross section of students from schools to colleges to build content.

Author is an inspirational Guru — alumnus of IIT Bombay-, former Director of a prestigious MBA institute at Symbiosis University who has authored more than forty self-help books. He has specially written ten micro books for this purpose.
